REVIEW | TUTTI FRUTTI B&L | EDMONTON

What came first? The chicken or the egg? Tutti Frutti Breakfast & Lunch or Cora's?

I only ask because Tutti Frutti Breakfast & Lunch is like Cora's long lost second cousin. Their menus are strikingly similar and they both believe that fruit is the most important food group of the day.

We went to their north location (by Skyview in the Safeway complex) after watching an early showing of Inside Out at the north Cineplex. Cute movie, but didn't quite live up to the hype for me.

Tutti Frutti B&L are open everyday from 6 am to 3 pm, except for Sundays which opens an hour later at 7. We arrived around 1:45 and there were only a couple of tables occupied. Granted it was an hour before closing and most folks were probably out at Heritage Festival as we went on Monday of August long. I assume they're busier during normal breakfast hours. The lovely hostess even joked that they were completely full and didn't have a table for four. We almost believed her because her delivery was so convincing.

We were sat at a table along the painted windows, although I wish we weren't since the sun was out in full force, making us warm and sweaty throughout our meal. Always fun.

The menu is quite extensive, with a majority of it dedicated to breakfast: eggs, crepes, waffles, french toast, omelets, fruit plates, etc. They also have some lunch options including burgers, sandwiches, and salads. Even though it was clearly the afternoon, we all settled for a breakfast dish. Stick to the tried and true.

LT and I both got the same thing (we're sisters after all), that being the Tom and Gerry, two eggs, bacon and sausage. It also came with a side of sliced pan-fried potatoes, buttered toast of your choice, and slices of pineapple, cantaloupe, and orange. I got scrambled (as seen in the first photo) while LT had her eggs over easy. My eggs were a little overcooked, but otherwise the rest of the dish was fine. The potatoes were probably the best part; the thin slices ensured that they got crisped up nicely in the pan. Then again, it's pretty hard to mess up a simple breakfast dish.

ST chose the Bagel, Smoked Salmon, and Cream Cheese, something she's had in the past. It came topped with tomatoes, red onion, and capers. It also came with a mountain of fresh fruit on the side. It looked like a pretty healthy portion of smoked salmon, as it covered the entire surface area of the bagel. ST remarked that it was quite filling, a reason why she ordered this dish again.

She also got a side of pan-fried potatoes, which again came in a hefty portion. I sense a recurring theme here...

KN was motivated to order the most Instagram-worthy dish (eyes before tastebuds people) and so she picked the Black Magic Crepe. Basically three chocolate chip crepes, topped with slices of fresh banana, strawberries, and whipped cream. I don't know if I would describe them as crepes, they seemed more like thinner pancakes. Again, the portion was huge and KN had to throw in the towel halfway through. Too much sweet on sweet, she would have preferred to have something salty for contrast.

Overall, Tutti Frutti is a pretty good option for breakfast. It's rare for me to go out for breakfast at restaurants since sleep is my best friend on weekends, but if you like Cora's and don't want to get blinded by their bright colors, try Tutti Frutti out.
